Destination Nelson, New Zealand
The Nelson-Marlborough region’s diverse economy includes the
country’s largest concentration of fisheries, wine and aquaculture
industries. It also has substantial forestry, horticulture, aviation,
tourism and arts industries as well as a sizeable conservation
estate, including three national parks.
NMIT has developed programmes that sustain
the region’s infrastructure, either directly
through specific industry training, or more generally, with our
business and computer technology programmes. We have also
developed a range of specialised programmes in niche areas in
conjunction with local business and industry representatives.
Our region is one of the most beautiful and desirable areas in New Zealand to live and
study. Each year, NMIT attracts around 3600 equivalent full time students who come to
enjoy the scenery, beaches, sunny warm climate, culture, relaxed lifestyle and
educational opportunities Nelson and Marlborough have to offer.
The Nelson-Tasman region is an irresistible blend of lifestyle and stunning landscapes
found at the top of the South Island.
The urban centres of Nelson and Richmond are surrounded by
three national parks, Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes,
encompassing golden sandy beaches to rugged mountain terrain.
They are blessed with some of New Zealand’s highest sunshine
hours.
The region’s economy is based on the ‘big four’ industries: seafood,
horticulture, tourism and forestry. Port Nelson is the largest fishing
port in Australasia. Other growth industries include art and craft,
aviation, engineering technology and information technology.
The region has low unemployment with opportunities for seasonal
or part time work. Or when you need a break, you can take part in
some of the many leisure activities on offer.
Enjoy art in its own place amongst the region’s more than 350
working artists, feast on succulent seafood and fine wines at local
cafes, vineyards and restaurants or shop for fresh produce and unique crafts at the
bustling weekend markets. Nelsonians love sport and there are a
wide range of sporting activities, from team sports such as rugby,
netball or basketball to kite surfing, kayaking or mountain biking. Or,
chill out to some great live music at one of the many laid-back local
venues.

The Marlborough Region embraces three distinct landscapes from the breathtaking blue-green waters of the Marlborough
Sounds to central Marlborough, the vineyard country famed for its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, through to the stunning high
country of the Awatere Valley and south along the Pacific Coast to Kaikoura, home to whales, seals and dolphins.
The region's commercial hub is Blenheim, a town of 25,000 people. It regularly gets some of the highest sunshine hours in New
Zealand and has low rainfall. Its economy is based on wine, aquaculture and tourism particularly in and around the stunning
Marlborough Sounds. It is home to the Marlborough Food and Wine Festival and the Omaka Airshow.
The region has low unemployment and plenty of seasonal and part time work opportunities.
