The Roy McKenzie Centre for the Study of Families at Victoria University of Wellington has the privilege of hosting the 19th Biennial conference of the Australasian Human Development Association (AHDA) to be held in Wellington, New Zealand, from July 8th to July 11th, 2015.
AHDA is the only society of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and brings together a community of researchers including educators, academics, and practitioners from Australia, New Zealand and Asia who all share interests in the social and cognitive development of young people.
Although the association has existed since the 1980s, this is the first time the conference of the ADHA has come to Wellington.
The aims of this conference are to:
- Offer an inclusive, multidisciplinary forum that is suitable for researchers, practitioners, policy makers and others working in the area of human development to come together and dialogue.
- Share knowledge, wisdom and insights on research and initiatives aimed at promoting healthy development and learning for young people and families.
We are very excited to be offering a programme based on the theme “Growing Healthy Young People, Children and Families”. This theme will focus on research that examines:
- The development of resilience for young people and families
- Identifying risk and protective factors in development and learning
- Policies that enhance the well-being and educational achievement of young people and families
- Contextual factors that promote/influence positive development and learning (e.g., schools, government, communities)
- Advances in theoretical perspectives or models of all areas of human development
- The assessment and evaluation of language, learning and behaviour
The day before the main conference begins we will be offering a one-day workshop entitled Bullying: Identifying Effective Prevention and Intervention Strategies. This one-day event will bring together researchers, policy makers, as well as groups and individuals who work in this area as we seek to reduce the incidence of this behaviour across the life-span and across different contexts.
The 2015 ADHA conference will showcase Wellington as the capital city of New Zealand, and home to our parliament. As such, we will be specifically seeking to promote our city as a leader in discussions on vulnerable children and families and evidence-based initiatives to bridge the gap between research, policy and the lives of young people in our society
