2013 EQC/NZSEE Ivan Skinner Award
for the Advancement of Earthquake Engineering Research in New Zealand
Applications are invited for the 2013 EQC/NZSEE Ivan Skinner Award. The objective of the
award is to advance the common interest of the Earthquake Commission (EQC) and the
New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering Incorporated (NZSEE) in promoting
research outcomes, which reduce the impacts of earthquakes on New Zealand
communities.
Applicant’s are ideally:
•
A New Zealand earthquake engineering researcher who has already demonstrated
high promise with early achievements; or
•
Undergraduate students or individuals holding other relevant qualifications who
show exceptional promise in contributing to the field of earthquake engineering
research; or
•
Employed in a role to which earthquake-engineering research is relevant and
undertaken.
Preference is likely to be given to individuals who are at a stage in their careers at which
the award can make an important contribution to their further progress and/or who have
a commitment to make further advances in earthquake engineering research. In addition,
pioneering or innovative research based on unusual combinations of knowledge and skills
may be given favourable consideration.
It is not expected that the Award be used solely for towards or to complete a research
task. The Award should be used towards or in connection with the advancement of
earthquake engineering research. For example, the Award may be used by the recipient
to initiate post-doctoral research, participate in international study groups or to publish
completed work.
The EQC/NZSEE Ivan Skinner 2013 Award has a value of $10,000.
The recipient must agree to provide EQC and the NZSEE with a short report as soon as
practicable following completion of the relevant activity or research to which the Award
was applied (and in any event no later than two years after the Award is made) which
describes how the recipient used the Award. The report is to be in a form suitable for
publication in the NZSEE Bulletin, for distribution by the Earthquake Commission, and for
presentation to the Commission’s Board.
No application form is required.
Applicants should provide the following information briefly but clearly:
•
A brief relevant curriculum vitae (one page).
•
A brief statement which explains why the applicant believes he or she would be a
suitable candidate for the Award having regard to the criteria set out above.
•
References and abstracts for relevant publications/presentations by the applicant.
•
The names and contact details of two referees prepared to comment on the
application.
•
A letter of support from a relevant expert/mentor.
•
A statement on further financial support conditional on receipt of the Award.
•
A brief outline of the research or activity which will be enabled/facilitated by the
award giving the objectives, procedures and intended outcomes (suggested length
of up to two pages).
•
A brief work plan indicating the start and finish dates of the proposed research or
activity and the current status if the proposed research is a continuation of ongoing
research (suggested length of up to one page).
The recipient of the Award will be chosen by a panel established by NZSEE and including
at least one person nominated by the Commission. The decision of the panel will be final,
and no correspondence will be entered into.
Applications shall be in the hands of the
Executive Officer,
NZSEE,
PO Box 2193,
Wellington 6140
or email to exec@nzsee.org.nz
by Wednesday 27th February 2013.
The EQC/NZSEE Skinner Award will be presented at the 2013 NZSEE annual
Conference in Wellington, at the Conference Dinner on Saturday 27th April 2013
The 2013 Otto Glogau Award
Otto Glogau, Chief Structural Engineer of the Ministry of Works, was a great thinker in the
development of engineering concepts and design loadings for improving the structural
performance of buildings to resist earthquake effects. Otto played a large part in the
pioneering development of the 1976 Loadings Code.
This award is offered annually to the author or authors presenting the best paper during
the three years ending 30 June preceding the date of the award. Those eligible are
authors, whether members or non-members of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake
Engineering, of any paper published in the Bulletin of the NZSEE within the previous three
years: also, authors of any paper published elsewhere within the previous three years,
provided at least one is a member of the Society, and the paper is nominated in writing to
the Management Committee by a member of the NZSEE at least one month prior to the
date of the award being presented.
The criteria for selection of the Otto Glogau Award are merit and the degree to which the
paper advances the objects of the Society. However, when papers of equal merit are being
considered for the award, preference will be given to authors who have not yet received
the award. In any year the presentation or not of an Award will be at the sole discretion of
the NZSEE Management Committee.
Two years must pass from the date of the award before an author is again eligible to
receive the award. (For multi-authored papers, the term “author” in this paragraph refers
to all authors)
The award is in the form of a sum of money ($500.00) to purchase books, plus a
certificate.
Nominations including a copy of the Paper as published should reach the
Executive Officer,
NZSEE,
PO Box 2193,
Wellington 6140
or email to exec@nzsee.org.nz
by Wednesday 27th March 2013.
The Award will be presented at the 2013 NZSEE annual Conference in Wellington,
at the Conference Dinner on Saturday 27th April 2013

qualification at a New Zealand institution including research relevant to the mission of the
NZSEE, which is to gather, shape and apply knowledge to reduce the impact of
earthquakes on our communities.
Applicants should be intent on pursuing a career in earthquake engineering or the practice
of mitigating the effects of earthquakes, and must demonstrate outstanding ability and
promise. We expect applicants to be Student Members of the Society.
The NZSEE Scholarship 2013 will have a value of $5,000. The recipient must agree to
continue their studies for at least a full academic year and to present the findings of their
