On behalf of the New Zealand Association of Gerontology and the organising committee it is my pleasure to invite you to attend our 2016 conference to be held in Wellington, New Zealand at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th September. Whatever your discipline or interest in ageing, we believe you will find much that appeals within our rich and varied programme.
The theme of the conference is ‘Making active ageing a reality’. Within this theme, the focus will be on finding speakers who come from a strong scientific evidence base. The range of international and national speakers and champions of a society in which people age well will be presenting a programme that is rich and diverse in content. The ongoing prosperity and well-being of our ageing society is dependent on sound research, wise policy making, and informed debate. This conference provides the opportunity to actively engage with issues that will influence future trends relating to making active ageing a reality.

2016 NZ Association of Gerontology Conference Welcome from Mayor Celia Wade-Brown
Tēnā koutou. Welcome to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city and host of the 2016 NZ Association of Gerontology conference. From 15 to 17 September, dedicated advocates for older people will discuss making active aging a reality.
The capital is a great place for people of all ages. You can be physically, mentally and culturally very active. In April this year Wellington City Council opened the Leonie Gill pathway in Kilbirnie, which is right next to one of the city’s biggest retirement villages and has been widely used by seniors.
Wellington’s network of museums, galleries and theatres will entertain and amuse you. I welcome conference delegates to enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere and experience our world-class eateries, coffee spots and craft beer breweries. Our city’s dynamic and busy centre is connected with breath-taking natural beauty that makes it a one-of-a-kind place.
