\n\t\tPre-conference Workshops \n\t<\/h1>\n\t

We are delighted to confirm two pre-conference workshops for attendees of the NMC2023 conference will take place on Sunday, 3 September 2023 at Rutherford House, Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand.<\/p>\n

These bespoke workshops will be presented by Tanya Jondahl, Talking Trouble Aotearoa NZ, and Haley Farrar and Sarah Roth Shank from Aspen Restorative Consulting.<\/p>\n

The cost to attend the workshops is $450 NZD excluding GST.\u00a0 Should you wish to register for only one workshop, the cost is $250 NZD excluding GST.<\/p>\n

Tea, coffee, and a light lunch are available for attendees.<\/p>\n\t

Accessible and effective communication <\/strong><\/h5>\nPresenter:<\/strong> Tanya Jondahl, Talking Trouble Aotearoa NZ

In this bespoke workshop, we will explore the interactions that wh\u0101nau (children, young people, parents, grandparents and others) working alongside mediators and restorative justice practitioners may encounter. Whilst acknowledging that wh\u0101nau will have diverse strengths and communication profiles (some will be highly literate and articulate whereas others may find talk-based activities challenging) this workshop will highlight ways in which communication barriers can be reduced. Participants will have the opportunity to:<\/p>\n\u2022 Reflect on the communication demands within the interactions they have with wh\u0101nau.
\n\u2022 Reflect on their own communication skills e.g., do they rely mostly on talking, what strategies do they already use to adapt their communication, how easy is it for them to simplify the words, concepts and sentences they use.
\n\u2022 Observe and practice a range of compensatory communication strategies which can make it easier for people to understand, participate and say what they want to say.\n

Tanya Jondahl<\/h4>\n

Tanya’s ancestors are from England and Ireland. She grew up in Nelson and Wellington, and her heart is in Te Tai Tokerau. She lives with her wh\u0101nau in Wellington.<\/p>\n

Tanya Jondahl is a qualified and experienced speech-language therapist and communication assistant. She has been appointed as a Communication Assistant by the Court for High, District, Youth and Family Court cases as well as in other justice system contexts such as parole board hearings, family group conferences and assessments with psychologists. Tanya has experience working with children, young people and adults across education, justice and mental health settings. She has previously worked for the Ministry of Education, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner and Central Regional Health School.<\/p>\n\t

Circles are a simple but powerful tool used to support group conversations across a wide array of contexts. From proactive applications for relationship building and norms setting through towards reactive conflict resolution and incident response, this longstanding restorative technique can be used to support greater cohesion, empathy building, and collaborative decision making. This workshop will include theoretical foundations as well as practical experience in the facilitation of several circle applications.<\/p>\n

Haley Farrar<\/h4>\n

Haley Farrar, JD is a restorative practices educator, facilitator, coach, and researcher. Haley transitioned to restorative justice from a legal career in 2013. She moved to Aotearoa as a Fulbright Fellow in 2015 to conduct independent research across the country, exploring restorative justice facilitator standards, motivations, and competencies. Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Haley now calls Wellington home.<\/p>\n

As the Managing Director of Aspen Restorative Consulting, Haley now supports a number of organisations to implement restorative approaches both proactively and reactively to prevent and repair harm. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Colorado and obtained her Juris Doctorate from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2011. She is a licensed attorney in Colorado, an accredited mediator, and a certified coach. She also serves on the Advisory Council of the National Association for Community and Restorative Justice (US).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"WORKSHOP-12\"\n\t

Sarah Roth<\/h4>\n

Sarah is a restorative justice educator, researcher and practitioner. She is currently a Senior Consultant at Aspen Restorative Consulting and holds a PhD in public policy and restorative justice from Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. Sarah has worked on a range of projects in the public sector and in tertiary education focusing on the institutional design and implementation of restorative initiatives, and also teaches university and postgraduate courses on the subject.<\/p>\n

Sarah is equally passionate about working towards wholeness and restoration on the interpersonal level as well as on the systemic level. She is trained in Defense Victim Outreach (DVO), restorative facilitation and circle processes, and regularly facilitates training and casework in workplaces. Sarah lives in Wellington, New Zealand, with her husband and young son and enjoys running through the trails, playing field hockey, and drinking good coffee.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
