Accessible and effective communication

Presenter: Tanya Jondahl, Talking Trouble Aotearoa NZ
Date: Sunday, 3 September 2023, 10:00am- 1:00pm
Venue: Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand

In this bespoke workshop, we will explore the interactions that whānau (children, young people, parents, grandparents and others) working alongside mediators and restorative justice practitioners may encounter. Whilst acknowledging that whānau will have diverse strengths and communication profiles (some will be highly literate and articulate whereas others may find talk-based activities challenging) this workshop will highlight ways in which communication barriers can be reduced. Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Reflect on the communication demands within the interactions they have with whānau.
• Reflect on their own communication skills e.g., do they rely mostly on talking, what strategies do they already use to adapt their communication, how easy is it for them to simplify the words, concepts and sentences they use.
• Observe and practice a range of compensatory communication strategies which can make it easier for people to understand, participate and say what they want to say.
