The East Coast Basin has a strongly intertwined sedimentological and stratigraphic history.

Within the southeastern North Island, the modern Hikurangi forearc basin is superimposed on the Late Cretaceous eastern Gondwana forearc basin. This trip spans several sites which assess the stratigraphic evolution of the East Coast Basin through the evolution of the active Gondwana forearc basin, through Latest Cretaceous-Paleogene quiescence, to initial stirrings of tectonism in the Eocene, right through to carbonate reef formation on structural highs during Pliocene-Pleistocene syn-tectonic deformation. Features included in this trip include Late Cretaceous polymict conglomerates, tsunamite deposits across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, Paleocene limestone and greensands containing distinct bioturbation assemblages, Cretaceous fault reactivation during middle Miocene shortening, and shallow marine clastic-rich coquina limestone successions. These sites and sedimentary features can all be inextricably linked through the tectonic evolution of the basin, providing an index of Zealandia’s dynamic geological setting.
