Chatham Islands

Date: 31 January – 7 February 2026
Leader: Hamish Campbell

This excursion is a rare opportunity to visit a remote outpost of Southern Gondwana and Eastern Zealandia.

We will explore aspects of:

1) submarine Gondwana margin: metamorphic basement (Mesozoic Chatham Schist)
2) subaerial Gondwana margin: fluvial flood plain to marginal marine sedimentary rocks (Tupuangi Formation, mid-Cretaceous)
3) subaerial Zealandia: intraplate basalt volcanics (Late Cretaceous)
4) submarine Zealandia: volcanogenic, authigenic and biogenic marine sedimentary rocks (Late Cretaceous to Pliocene), and  5) subaerial Chatham Islands: shallow marine shell-beds,eolian sand, paleosol, peat, tephra (Pleistocene – Recent)
