Geoff Young, Director at BPO LTD & President NZ Trade & Industrial Waste Forum
Coming from an operational background, I have been involved in Environmental Management for the last 25 years. I was the very first Environmental Officer in New Zealand Dairy Group back in 1991, one of the cooperatives that now make up Fonterra, and I was involved in major redevelopment of the Te Rapa site over the following 8 years.
I then teamed up with two others to start Trident Monitoring Services Ltd which in later years became BPO Ltd, a reference to the Best Practicable Option clause from the original Resource Management Act. Today BPO serves a number of functions, from temporary and permanent water monitoring installations to waste water pre-treatment and waste water management systems not to mention cleaner production systems.
Advising primary processing industries on water measurement, management techniques and raw material utilisation, I have been lucky enough to work in a number of countries over the years including Venezuela, Chile, USA, Australia as of course, here at home. These days I am the Managing Director of BPO, now a team made up of 10 individuals, each bringing different qualities and skill sets to the table to cover for my shortcomings! The team have also made it possible for me to take up the role of National President of the New Zealand Trade and Industrial Waste Forum.
Tara Okan, Water Quality Scientist, DCM Process Control Ltd & Aqua Infrastructure Ltd
I have in the past worked as a professional magician and in the film industry for 34 years of my working life – completing projects in 26 different countries and working on more than 80 films, film for television or film for TVC projects. For the past 11 years I have also taken on environmental work at DCM Process Control Ltd, an environmental monitoring and process control company – working on water and trade waste treatment and the protection and restoration of our Lakes and Rivers – after observing environmental degradation in our lakes, rivers and natural environment during 9 years as a film location manager I had to do something about that.
Recently I have also joined Aqua Infrastructure Ltd where my experience is now being put to use designing, building and project managing waste water treatment plants and feed forward control processes on industrial sites, particularly those dealing with heavy pollutants.
Jason Dinsdale, Trade Waste Officer, Timaru District Council
I was born and bred in Northland where I started in industry as a laboratory technician working for Northland Dairy Company monitoring and testing their trade waste flows and final product. Since then I have spent 20 years working in large Food Industries in a range of roles from laboratory to operating. These Industries include Dairy, Food Grade Oils and Frozen Foods (including potato products and meat industry).
I have been living in Timaru since 2004 and have been the Trade Waste Officer for the Timaru District Council since the start of 2014.
Hamish Jones, Sales Engineer, Hynds Environmental & Technical Chair, NZ Trade & Industrial Waste Forum
My background has been based in the water, storm water & waste water industry. I currently work for Hynds Pipe Systems Limited in the Environmental Department as a stormwater and industrial waste technical specialist and my role includes designing treatment solutions for stormwater and or wastewater discharges from sites (and their processes) to the local receiving environment which includes local reticulation, land discharges, rivers and the sea. I am also the chair of the technical group for the New Zealand Trade and Industrial Waste Forum and the Board Chairman for Laingholm Primary School.
I have previously worked as an independent consultant within the waste water industry and also worked for Watercare Services Limited where my roles included working with customers in relation to regulation of their site processes and developing (project managing) bylaws and regional waste water charges.
Rod Murray, Chief Engineer, Environmental/Category Manager, Hynds Pipe Systems Ltd
Initially trained as a civil engineer, in the early-90’s I branched out to the environmental fields focusing on water and waste water treatment plus a secondary string to the bow being solid waste management. With a career now spanning 32-years, and having lived and worked offshore for a reasonable portion of this, and I am now content to settle back home and work with my peers to resolve some of New Zealand’s more pressing water-related issues.
As a professional engineer and Certified Environmental Practitioner, I feel a strong need to contribute to our society and accordingly I actively participate on a number of organisations in a voluntary capacity as follows:
- WaterNZ Technical Committee
- SWANS-SIG (Deputy Chair)
- Stormwater Group – Committee Member
- Environment Institute of Australia & New Zealand – Executive Committee Member
- New Zealand Trade and Industrial Waste Forum – Committee Member
Within the Hynds organisation I am responsible for developing and implementing products and design solutions in the water management industry that covers: storm water control and treatment; wastewater treatment and disposal; and oil/water separation and treatment.
In the past I have been involved in the Climate Change Taskforce and Energy Steering Committees for Fletcher Building, with work also completed on a number of waste-to-energy schemes and resource recovery projects.
Richard Manson, Trade Waste Officer, Wellington Water
Mike Sahayam, Trade Waste Officer, Palmerston North City Council
I have a science background, studied chemistry at Massey University and later working at the university for 15 years as a technician and tutor in the Department of Technology and Engineering. I was involved in the wastewater chemistry and microbiology programs as well as teaching meat microbiology and meat chemistry to meat industry leaders. My own research interest was looking at how drinking moderate amounts of red wine had some health benefits and which NZ wines were best for this reason.
For the last 10 years I have worked at Palmerston North City Council as a Trade waste Officer. My role has involved not only monitoring and managing incoming Trade waste, but also working with industries to improve the quality of effluent they discharge. As well is Trade waste I also manage all the wastewater analytical data, including operational and compliance data.
