Tourist Activities during Conference Dates (Accompanying Person’s Programme)
The Committee has put together a number of sightseeing activities for delegates and accompanying persons to discover Christchurch and its surroundings.
How to book: Once you have registered for the conference, your registration confirmation email will include a link to make a booking for the tours.
All tours will depart from and return to the lobby of Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.
Delegates and or accompanying persons are required to be ready and waiting 15 minutes ahead of tour departure times.
Cancellations
Cancellations must be advised in writing to [email protected]. No refund will be given for cancellations received after 25 October 2024 (including “no shows”).
The organising committee reserves the right to cancel a trip at any time, offering a full refund (of the tourist activity fee only) or offering the participant the opportunity to change to another available trip.

Lord of the Rings Edoras Tour

Take a journey into Middle-earth with a full-day tour from Christchurch to a key Lord of the Rings filming location. Setting out from Christchurch, travel to the remote and beautiful Mt Potts high country station (ranch). Here, peaceful Mt Sunday was transformed into Edoras, home to the Riders of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. On a guided walk learn how the set was built on top of sheer cliffs, see exclusive photos from the film set’s construction, and enjoy the awe-inspiring 360-degree views from the summit (just like Eowyn did in the movies!). Take in the pristine beauty, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and understand why the actors and crew fell in love with this stunning location. During the tour see the famed Misty Mountains and the area which formed the backdrop to the terrifying battle of Helm’s Deep, while enjoying informative and entertaining commentary from your local guide. Picnic lunch is included.

Waipara wine tour and lunch
12 noon to approximately 5.00 pm.
11.45 am meet at the front door of Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.
This tour explores 3-4 of North Canterbury’s boutique vineyards. From Christchurch travel 45 minutes north of through the New Zealand countryside to the Waipara Valley, well known for its warm, dry climate and rich alluvial soils, ideal for superior wine production. Over 40 vineyards and wineries pepper the landscape of the valley, with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominating local plantings. This winery tour includes Pegasus Bay, Waipara Springs, Torlesse and Waipara Hills Winery.
Platter lunch at a Waipara winery restaurant. The platter lunch includes tastes of both a regional and New Zealand flavour and is the perfect accompaniment to some of the wineries, fine wines.

Otautahi (Christchurch) Hikoi (walk)

This guided walk is a perfect way to discover cultural treasures hidden in plain sight and learn how local Māori are expressed in the rebuild of the city.
The walking tour begins with a mihi whakatau (welcome) and karakia (prayer) to ensure visitors are safe on their journey. Your walking guide shares the creation story of Ranganui (sky father) and Papatūānuku (earth mother) and talks about ancestors story of how the hongi brought to life Hineahuone.
Following the footsteps of tipuna (ancestors) as you walk along the city laneways and river, learn Māori and settler stories demonstrating how we are kaitiaki (guardians) for the future.
This cultural tour celebrates the diversity that is modern-day Ōtautahi (Christchurch). From stories of gathering mahinga kai on the banks of the river, iconic explorers, the city's change makers to modern art and architecture this is a perfect way to explore the central city.

Akaroa and Akaroa Harbour cruise
8.45 am to approximately 5.30 pm
8.30 am meet in lobby at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.
Travel to Akaroa via the Sign of Takahe, Sign of Kiwi, Governors Bay, Gebbies Pass, Lake Ellesmere, Lake Forsyth and Little River. Stop en-route at the Barry’s Bay Cheese factory and sample some fine New Zealand cheeses.
Visit the beautiful unspoilt old French whaling town of Akaroa. A charming small township nestled in an inner harbour bay of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. The township contains a host of historic buildings, craft and gift shops together with a multitude of idyllic photo opportunities. Lunch is on our own at your own expense. In the afternoon enjoy the 2 hour Akaroa Harbour Cruise. During the cruise you may see dolphins, penguins and seals.
